The Princess Who Knew

The Princess Who Knew

She pats dry her once unsightly hair.
She stops and listens to the sound of the ruckus outside.
“Just a quiet peek won’t hurt.”
The queen steadfast at stripping the bed.
Dead in the center she placed a simple green pea.
“This surely cannot be her test for me.”
The princes gazed at her work;
20 mattresses, 20 comforters, all perfectly placed.
Her majesty pauses gasping for air, then turns to the possible heir.
She sees that the princes lay still in the bed.

“Goodnight my dear, I’ll see you in the morning. I hope you are the one for my sweet Prince Charming.”

The princess awoke with a grin on her face.
17 mattresses down, then she took a fall.
She gets up in a panic, what will she say?
“Good morning your highness how are you  today?”
“I’m well. As for you, I’m sure you slept sound.”
“All the opposite I’m afraid. I was up all night tossing and turning. As if a rock were under me which bruised my back.”
The princess was sure she was going to be heir, for the queen was to daft for the princess to bare.
“My love. Will you marry me. For I love you so even my mother is pleased.
“Yes!”
The sun gleamed from her white teeth. She knew she had cheated her way into royalty.
